There is updated guidance on the tax treatment of employer-provided welfare counselling. The welfare counselling exemption allows employers to provide certain counselling services to employees without a tax charge arising. As part of the update, new examples have been added to illustrate support that may fall within the welfare counselling exemption, including mental health support and menopause support.
There are other employment income exemptions that may be relevant when employers provide health and wellbeing support, including: recommended medical treatment provided to support an employee’s return to work, health screening and employee assistance programmes.
